Hello,

The form is Microsoft Word compatible and if you save a copy of the Word form as a PDF it can very easily be opened on any computer making it very accessible.  I'm sure your friend will be able to easily access the info as a PDF. Also, regarding HIPAA, yes the information is personal information often referenced in medical documents or paperwork however your business is not considred a "Covered Entity" has defined by www.hhs.gov  government website since you are not electronically sending information and only putting it on a storage device as a convenience service for your customer.  Simply sign the service agreement stating that you will not share your customers info and shred your paperwork.

If you review the info on the government site regarding who is a covered entity, you will clearly see that this type of business is NOT a covered entity.  Many people thing of HIPAA with regards to any information of a personal nature however there are very specific rules defined under the regulation.

I just got my kit last week and after reading some information on this forum decided to check some stuff out. The hospital in our area will not use the device because all their computers connect to one main computer and USB is disabled. Also our paramedic friend said they can only use it if it's excel compatible and will work with their systems. He's going to check it out for us. But did tell me that the info that is being put on there is hippa info and we will need hippa certification. And he said its pretty obvious that whoever made the form was not in the medical field and we need to figure out how to change a few things on the form if we do it. So we will see.....

RE: HIPAA Certification - NOT Needed

Hello,

For those interested and confused about HIPAA, as a business owner who is simply documenting and entering medical data from a customer onto the MEDAlert device you do NOT need any special training or certification. This is because you are NOT considered a 'covered entity' and are not transmitting data electronically.  There is no transmission of data since you enter it directly on the MEDAlert for your client.  A Business Associate as mentioned in this post pertains to covered entities.

It is however a good idea to ensure privacy by shredding all paperwork provided by the client with their information. Also, sign the service agreement which also states to the customer that you will not share any of their private information.

You can get information on HIPAA for free on the government website at: www.hhs.gov

Hello,

I'm MessyG from the East.

I am in the business but I'm not rolling yet; almost there though.

There is a February, 2010 LAW that includes Business Associates to be responsible for protection Personal Medical Information that  we handle. Certification can be done on line for as little as $25.

There are many sites but I just completed the course at: My HIPAA Training. It was quick, knowledgeable, and easy. We are handling Medical information so certification is necessary.

Planning to have success!

MessyG:)
